Announcing Our 2014 Scholarship Winners

The New England College Council is pleased to announce that three outstanding students will be awarded NECC scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year at NECC member institutions.

Gabriela Constantin, originally of Romania and a student at Southern Maine Community College, impressed judges with her enthusiasm for the many friendly, intelligent, and helpful people at SMCC who have guided her through her first experience in another country. “Gaby,” who holds a solid 4.0 GPA at SMCC, has become increasingly interested in social issues and would like to support equality for women or become a social worker in order to assist those struggling with issues like rape or abuse, eating disorders, or homelessness. She credits SMCC with enriching not only her knowledge but also her character, and she strongly appreciates the encouragement of her teachers and the support of her parents in her pursuit of a college degree. Gaby is determined to make everyone proud, and the NECC is proud of all of her achievements.

Susan Sweeney, a student at Mount Wachusett Community College, appealed to judges with her determination to pursue a higher education degree after 31 years of marriage and after raising three children. Her husband’s brush with a potentially fatal disease caused Susan to question how she would support her family if the unthinkable happened, but it also caused Susan to question how she could express her newfound respect for quality nursing care for patients and their families. Susan has actively volunteered in her community for years, and now she pursues having an even greater impact on others: completing a two-year nursing program at MWCC, after which she will pursue her BSN while working as a nurse in a medical practice. The NECC wishes Susan well in her endeavors to nurture patients and their families.

Claudia Dufour, a 17-year-old Phi Theta Kappa member at Quinebaug Valley Community College with a 4.0 GPA, wowed judges with her passion for learning and her hunger for knowledge. Claudia, who is about to graduate with a degree in General Studies, will stay on at QVCC to obtain an associate degree in Engineering Science. In addition, Claudia is a part-time student at Eastern Connecticut State University, where she pursues musical studies, and she tutors fellow students in everything from computer science to American Sign Language at QVCC’s Willimantic Center. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science, Claudia plans on obtaining a master’s in engineering, mathematics, or business – or even a combination of all three. The NECC agrees that Claudia is an extremely diligent and goal-oriented student and is confident that she will achieve great things.
